The Central Coast Eisteddfod began in 1975 as a result of three arts loving locals, Don and Lil Turner and Bill Wallace approaching the Gosford Lions Club. The Lions Club kindly gave their support and The Central Coast Eisteddfod began. (Don and Lil have since passed away, but Bill is still a great supporter of the eisteddfod and is now a "Life Member").
We have regrouped and begin our year with the Dance Sections, which missed out completely last year. Other sections, such as Piano, Song, Speach and Drama,Woodwinds, School and Community Choirs and Orhestra will follow throughout the year.
In 1975 the eisteddfod offered 48 different sections, which increase to 514 sections in 1994. It has continued to grow and grow and and in previous years the Central Coast Eisteddfod attracted 5,000 entrants. (Unfortunately, last year, a number of sections could not be run due to the fact Laycock Theatre became financually unaccessable to us and new venues could not be found in time.) HOWEVER this year we are back on track with other great venues being found. Thus Dance, is our first section to start the year off and other section dates will be be announced gradually over the next few months. So keep watching this web site.
This year, which is the 36th Anniversary of our Eisteddfod, we are expecting a bigger and better Eisteddfod than ever before.' We are presently looking for a sponsor or a number of smaller sponsors. Any sponsor who supports this wonderful cultural event will do very well out of it as their name/s will be "'out there'' for not only the 5,000 entrants, but to all the school and community members and their families who are attached to the eisteddfod,Their names will be printed on the official programmes, -. and of there will be the publicity for a major sponsor to have their name attached to the eisteddfod, e.g. "The .....................Central Coast Eisteddfod". Anyone interested in coming on board should contact the Eisteddfod committee by emailing us or writing to P.O. Box 6011, West Gosford.
The Eisteddfod encourages amateur students and performers as solo artists, or groups, the opportunity to gain experience by performing their particular art form in front of an audience.
Performers can enter the section that fits their particular style and instrument. These styles cover classical, jazz, popular etc. for piano, strings, brass, woodwinds, song, speech and drama, dance, school and community choirs and bands, etc.
Performers can begin as young as they are able, with sections beginning with 6 years and under through to 18 years and on to the Open Sections for adults. In recent years sections have been added for children with special needs. e.g. popular vocal and speech and drama.
A qualified adjudicator judges the best performances in each section and they are awarded prizes. Each performer is given a helpful written critic on their performance.
Championships are held for qualified performers and Scholarships are also awarded. A "Grand Finale" concert of the most outstanding performances of all sections and styles has been held each year and is a concert not to be missed.
Adjudicators have praised the high standard of performances in the Central Coast Eisteddfod over the many years.
A number of well known performers have had their beginnings with the Central Coast Eisteddfod. Names such as Natalie Imbruglia; dancer Joshua Horner, who plays the lead in "Billy Elliot The Musical"; dancer and singer, the late Belinda Emmett; Amy Campbell, who placed second in the 2009 season of Network Ten's "So You Think You Can Dance; Ben McKenzie, contestant on season 5 of Network Ten's "Australian Idol"; up-and-coming international opera singer, Lucy Baille; and the list goes on. Others are now teachers of their art, or work in the entertainment and music industries.
